6 to 9 June 2024

We all have the right to feel safe and secure—especially online now that a big part of our life takes place in the digital sphere. Setting a code of conduct to protect you from cyberbullying and hate speech or forcing companies to be more transparent about the way they use your data are some of the priorities of the EU in this matter.

Political Programmes

EUROPEAN PEOPLE’S PARTY (EPP)

The EPP believes that Europeans should live in freedom, prosperity, and security. The party prioritizes the protection of citizens and the rule of law, emphasizing the need for strong external borders, prevention of illegal migration, counterterrorism measures, and efforts against organized crime and corruption.

PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE OF SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS (S&D)

The S&D does not have a clear statement on security and safety. For more information, please refer to its website.

RENEW EUROPE

Renew believes that an effective and coherent Common Foreign and Security Policy is needed. This should include traditional EU 'soft power' but also strengthened security and defence policies such as increased defence cooperation, enhancing EU security capabilities, an assessment of EU-NATO relations, an effective sanctions policy and improved anti-terrorism cooperation.

THE GREENS/ EUROPEAN FREE ALLIANCE (EFA)

The Greens/EFA envisions a Europe who is able to welcome people in dignified and humane conditions, and to treat everyone as full citizens. They aim to achieve this by putting in place solidarity mechanisms to welcome asylum seekers and migrants, safeguarding their rights, and reversing EU action in the world that creates the conditions which force people to leave their homes.

EUROPEAN CONSERVATIVES AND REFORMISTS (ECR)

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group advocates for enhanced internal and external security through efficient information sharing among Member States. They propose measures such as securing external borders, increasing the return of failed asylum seekers, and collaborating with third countries to prevent dangerous migrations.

IDENTITY AND DEMOCRACY (ID)

The Identity and Democracy Party emphasises the importance of a European migration policy based on strict control of the external borders. They underline that Europe's borders must be intended as geographical limits of the continent where its own European citizens are guarded and protected. The I&D Party opposes the idea of a European army and a centralising European Union.

THE LEFT—GUE/ NGL

In The European Left's vision, global security can only be achieved through working to build peace and resolve conflicts diplomatically and through negotiation, based on the United Nations Charter and respect for international law, as well as the protection of social rights, co-development, food security, and climate security.
