Political Programmes
EUROPEAN PEOPLE’S PARTY (EPP)
The EPP is committed to combating climate change and preserving a sustainable planet for future generations through an approach based on scientific evidence. The party advocates for a transition to a low-carbon economy through measures such as an effective carbon pricing system, investments in sustainable mobility solutions, and the establishment of a robust Energy Union.
PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE OF SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS (S&D)
The S&D recognises that climate change is the most serious threat facing humanity and calls for a just transition to a sustainable economy. They support the European Green Deal, which aims to make Europe a climate-neutral continent by 2050. They call for investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure, and advocates for measures to protect workers and communities affected by the transition.
RENEW EUROPE
Renew Europe is fully committed to the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. They call for an ambitious EU climate law with effective instruments, based on technological neutrality that raises the targets for EU greenhouse gas emissions to 55 % by 2030 and reaches net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. For them, the ecological transition should go hand in hand with delivering economic prosperity and societal fairness.
THE GREENS/ EUROPEAN FREE ALLIANCE (EFA)
The Greens/EFA's climate change agenda focuses on ensuring that by 2024, the European Union is actively contributing to achieving the Paris Climate Summit objectives of limiting global warming to well under 2°C, aiming for 1.5°C. They emphasize the need to reverse trends in biodiversity loss and resource consumption, while concurrently promoting a regenerative economy.
EUROPEAN CONSERVATIVES AND REFORMISTS (ECR)
The European Conservatives and Reformists Group advocates for measures to address climate change, emissions, pollution, and food security that do not impose unnecessary burdens on businesses and Member States. For example, they oppose the Nature Restauration Law. They supported the EU's Emission Trading Scheme, striking a balance between climate commitments and industry protection. Air quality is also a priority for them, as well as illegal wildlife trade. The group prioritise a common-sense approach to ensure a prosperous, sustainable fishing sector that protects the environment and support farmers.
IDENTITY AND DEMOCRACY (ID)
I&D does not have a clear statement on climate change. For more information, please refer to its website.
THE LEFT—GUE/ NGL
Environment is one of the main topics The European Left advocates for. The Left relates the climate crisis to social inequalities and stands for a solidarity pact for employment, investment, and environmental protection. They believe that sustainable and just environmental, agriculture and fisheries policies means protecting nature, standing up for small rural and coastal communities and pushing for strict controls on toxic chemicals. The Left also strongly advocates for animal rights and welfare.
