Political Programmes
EUROPEAN PEOPLE’S PARTY (EPP)
The EPP recognises the central role of families in European society and pledges to uphold European social standards and increase living standards to support them. The party acknowledges the challenges facing young Europeans, such as job insecurity, housing affordability, and uncertainty about the future, which make it difficult for them to start families.
PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE OF SOCIALISTS AND DEMOCRATS (S&D)
The S&D believes that affordable and decent housing is a human right. They argue that the EU must take a leading role in ensuring that everyone has access to quality, affordable housing, with a particular focus on social housing. The group calls for an EU plan that regulates the European housing market, boosts public investment in green social housing, curbs housing prices, fights homelessness and ensures decent homes for children.
RENEW EUROPE
Renew does not have a clear statement on affordable housing. For more information, please refer to its website.
THE GREENS/ EUROPEAN FREE ALLIANCE (EFA)
The Greens/EFA stands for a housing system that works for people. Where everyone across Europe has access to affordable, quality, healthy homes. They believe that we should all be able to rent a home without the “airbnb effect” driving up monthly prices, and we should even be able to buy a home, just like many of our parents and grandparents were able to do.
EUROPEAN CONSERVATIVES AND REFORMISTS (ECR)
The European Conservatives and Reformists Group believes that making more social and communal housing and establishing housing programmes available can contribute to reducing homelessness.
IDENTITY AND DEMOCRACY (ID)
I&D does not have a clear statement on affordable housing. For more information, please refer to its website.
THE LEFT—GUE/ NGL
According to The European Left, decent and affordable housing is a human right. They stand in defence of low-cost and quality housing for all, and they advocate for the right to healthy and energy-efficiency housing. They believe social movements are one of the central actors in the fight against gentrification. They are in favour of regulating the housing market.
