How to vote in Netherlands

  • At polling stations based in your municipality. If you wish to vote in another municipality, you need to request a voter's pass on the Electoral Council's website.

    If you live abroad, you may register permanently as a 'Dutch voter abroad' on the municipal website of the Hague. Once successfully registered, you automatically receive your postal voting pass and return envelope by post before each election.

    If you are temporarily abroad, e.g. on holiday, you can only vote by proxy.

  • As a Dutch citizen voting in the Netherlands, you don’t need to register to vote.

    If you live abroad, you may register permanently as a 'Dutch voter abroad.

  • You do not need to register to vote. You will automatically receive a voting pass at your home address, two weeks prior to election day at the latest.

  • You need to bring your ID card, passport, or driver´s license, and your voting pass.

  • Voters from other EU Member States must fill in a Y-32 form. This is a one-off registration with your municipality. On the Y-32 form, you declare that you are not voting in the European Parliament election in another country. Otherwise you could vote twice in the same election, which is not allowed. If you are a Dutch national and you live in the Netherlands, you do not need to fill in a Y-32 form. The person should register up until 44 days before the election day.

  • Preferential Voting.

    In 2024, 31 MEPs will be elected in The Netherlands.

  • Political parties wishing to take part in the elections register with the Electoral Council on 23 April 2024. After this date, you may find more information on which parties are participating on the Electoral Council's as well as parties' own websites.

  • AAll polling stations should be accessible for voters with a disability. In some cases, voters may be given assistance when casting their vote. Read more here.
