How to vote in Italy

  • At polling stations.

    Italians living abroad can decide whether to vote for Italian MEPs or the MEPs in the country they are living in. The voting is made by post.

  • You do not need to register in advance as your municipal authorities automatically register you.

    If you are an Italian citizen living abroad, you are automatically registered on the Italian electoral roll by the Italian national authorities. However, you have to make sure you are registered with the register of Italians resident abroad (AIRE).

  • Registration is not needed for citizens or nationals living abroad.

  • ID & electoral card

  • You have to vote in a specific polling station (indicated on the electoral card) based on your home address.

    You have to register to vote no later than the 90th day before the date of the elections.

  • Preferential Voting.

    In 2024, 76 Italian MEPs will be elected.

  • The official list of candidates has not been released yet.

  • Voters in hospitals and nursing homes, may be admitted to vote at the place of hospitalization, presenting their electoral card and a specific certificate issued by the mayor at the request of the concerned person.

    Voters who suffer from serious infirmity for whom it is not possible to leave their homes may exercise their vote from home during the opening voting hours.

    Physically impaired voters may exercise their right to vote with the assistance of another voter from their family or a different accompanying person who may be registered on the electoral roll of any Italian municipality.
